Environmental assessment of the Gercus Formation using GIS technology

Section: Articles

Abstract

The Gercus Formation is one of the most important and widespread formations in northern and northeastern Iraq. This study evaluated the environmental impact of the Gercus Formation using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program to determine its geographical extent in northern Iraq and analyze its morphological and topographic characteristics. The study scope was defined as a 5-kilometer area around the formation's boundaries from all sides, to obtain a comprehensive view of the site and its surrounding impacts. Digital maps were prepared by building a comprehensive spatial database using digital data (DEM) and satellite images. Several analytical maps were also produced to serve the study objectives, including a Slope analysis map, an Elevation Analysis map, a Flow Accumulation and Drainage Network map, and a Soil Texture map. The study results helped identify watersheds, which is useful in designing water harvesting projects and land planning, reducing the risks of erosion and flooding, and evaluating the suitability of land for agriculture or development. This provides an important tool to support sustainable planning.
