29-49Abstract
This study evaluated the water quality (WQ) of the Tigris River at five locations within Mosul city over a two-year period (2022–2023), encompassing all four seasons. The analysis included key physicochemical parameters: nitrate (NO₃), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), total hardness (TH), sulfate (SO₄), chloride (Cl), total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and phosphate (PO₄). Results demonstrated that pH values remained within acceptable ranges, with a slight increase observed in 2023. Dissolved oxygen concentrations decreased in 2023, likely attributable to elevated organic pollution, whereas BOD levels increased significantly, indicating a higher organic load. Nutrient levels (PO₄, NO₃) and hardness parameters (Mg, TH) reached their highest values during autumn 2023, potentially due to agricultural runoff. The Water Quality Index (WQI) varied between 58.5 and 79.3, reflecting an overall improvement in water quality during 2023. Water quality status across Mosul was classified from moderate to good, influenced by seasonal fluctuations, urban development, and anthropogenic factors.
