Chronic Exposure to Diesel Generator Emissions: A Biochemical and Hematological Assessment among Residents in Mosul city, Iraq

Section: Articles

Abstract

In the few decades, the heavy dependence on diesel generators in Mosul city-Iraq, has presented a significant environmental and health issues. This research set out to analyze the biochemical and hematological changes linked to prolonged exposure to generator emissions among residents. A study was carried out comparing 150 individuals exposed to the exhaust with 110 control subjects residing in areas unaffected by it. The assessments covered aspects such as arterial blood gas (ABG) complete blood count (CBC) and oxidative stress markers. The study examined biomarkers (such as MDA) antioxidants (like glutathione and uric acid) inflammatory indicators (including carbonic anhydrase (CA)  and C reactive protein) as well as heavy metals like zinc, coper, lead, cadmium and nickel). The results showed reductions in Partial Pressure of Oxygen (PaO2) and Percentage of Oxygen Saturation (SaO2) levels along with a decrease in oxygenated hemoglobin percentage while showing an increase in carboxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin percentages which indicate inadequate oxygen levels and transportation issues. Additionally, there was a rise, in hemoglobin and red blood cell counts suggesting the bodys response to compensate for reduced oxygen levels. The biochemical tests revealed higher MDA and CA levels and lower GSH levels along with decreased zinc content and considerable buildup of harmful heavy metals in the body system. The overall finding highlight the significant health impacts of long term exposure, to generator fumes and stress the critical importance of implementing preventive measures at the community level.
