The environmental impact of the Al-Kharazi stream water discharges and their effect on the water quality of the Tigris River within the city of Mosul / Iraq

Section: Articles

Abstract

The current study was conducted on the sewage stream (Al-Kharazi) up to the Tigris River, where samples were collected from ten locations. The first six locations were on the stream, the seventh was the meeting point of the stream with the Tigris River, and the eighth to tenth were in the Tigris River to determine the extent of the Tigris River’s ability to self-purify. The current study showed that the average water temperature was 20.8°C at sites four and five, while the lowest average temperature was 18.2°C at site ten. The highest average electrical conductivity was 912 µS/cm at site five, while the lowest average electrical conductivity was 504 µS/cm at sites eight and nine. The lowest oxygen concentration values were recorded at site 5 (0.7 mg/L), while the highest value was recorded at site 10 (7.2 mg/L). The biological oxygen demand (BOD) concentrations ranged from 0.7 to 3.7 mg/L. The current study also showed that the calcium ion concentration was higher than the magnesium ion concentration at most sites. While the chloride ion recorded its highest value of 68 mg/L at the fourth location, the lowest values for the average concentration of phosphate ions, 0.51 mg/L, were recorded at the eighth and tenth locations. Ten standards were applied to calculate the water quality for drinking (WQI), where the highest value of the index, 83.5, was recorded at the ninth location in the river, while the lowest value of the index, 58.2, was recorded at the third location of the stream. The results of the current study indicate that at the tenth location, all values for the parameters decreased compared to the other locations, and this is an indication of the river's ability to purify itself.
